2026 Treaty Day Payments and Annuity Update for Robinson Huron Treaty
The annual treaty annuity payments for the Robinson Huron Treaty territory have commenced in spring 2026 and remain at $4.00 per person, unchanged since 1875. The Treaty, originally signed in 1850 between the Robinson Huron Treaty Anishinabek and the Crown, obligates collective annuity payments with a promise of augmentation if the territory's production allows without causing loss to the Crown.
A 2024 Supreme Court ruling recognized the Crown’s failure to increase the annuity as a breach of the Treaty. A 2024 settlement for past compensation of $10 billion was reached, but future annuity augmentation terms still require negotiation.
Canada, through Indigenous Services Canada, continues current payments without affecting treaty rights. Ongoing discussions among Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund, Canada, and Ontario focus on processes and data evaluation for fair annuity augmentation, considering economic productivity and community needs.
Negotiations intend to respect the original 1850 Treaty spirit, promoting prosperity and connection for Anishinaabe communities and future generations.
